1. taint (verb) – (of water) contaminated or polluted.
2. accumulate (verb) – gather/gain, obtain, acquire.
3. merit (verb) – deserve, warrant, justify.
4. radioactive (adjective) – having or producing a powerful and dangerous form of energy.
5. chronic (adjective) – persistent, long-term, continuing (or happening again and again for a long time).
6. chronic kidney disease (CKD) (noun) – a type of kidney disease in which there is gradual lossof kidney function over a period (of years). It often has no symptoms and is diagnosed by blood test.
7. cluster (noun) – collection, group, bunch.
8. stump (verb) – confuse, perplex,  bewilder.
9. epidemiologist (noun) – an expert in the study of how disease spreads and can be controlled.

15. arsenic noun) – a chemical/metallic element that forms a number of poisonous compounds, arsenic is found in nature at low levels mostly in compounds with oxygen, chlorine, and sulfur.
16. Holocene epoch/era (noun) – the Holocene (or Recent) is the current geological era/period/epoch which started some 11,500 years ago when the glaciers began to retreat.
17. sediment (noun) – silt, dregs, remains/deposited earth/mud.
18. hotspot (noun) – a place of significant activity.
19. uncover (verb) – reveal, disclose, expose.
20. at_risk (phrase) – danger/threat, jeopardy, peril.
