- spirit (noun) – real/true meaning, true intention, essence, mood, feeling, ethos.
- mandate (noun) – approval, acceptance, endorsement, authority (given by a constituency to someone acting as its representative).
- nod (noun) – indication, signal, sign (of approval).
- go through (phrasal verb) – undergo, be subjected to, put up with, cope with.
- second round counting (noun) – In Sri Lanka, voters elect a single winner by ranking up to three candidates in order of preference. If a candidate receives an absolute majority (more than 50% vote), they will be declared the winner. If not, a second round of counting will commence, taking into account second- and third-choice votes. it is an exercise undertaken now for the first time in the country’s election history.

- International Monetary Fund (IMF) (noun) – an international organization of 189 countries, headquartered in Washington, D.C., working to foster global monetary cooperation, secure financial stability, facilitate international trade, promote high employment and sustainable economic growth, and reduce poverty around the world.
- bailout (noun) – an act of providing financial help/support by the outside investors to a bank/institution/organisation which faces serious financial difficulty.
- bail-in (noun) – a way of helping a bank or other institution in financial difficulty, in which people/creditors of the bank to bear some of the burden by cancelling a part of the debt they are owed.
- overlook (verb) – fail to notice, ignore, dismiss, reject, neglect, disregard, pay no heed/attention to, take no notice of.
- consensual (adjective) – relating to consensus/consent; in agreement with those who involved.
- facet (noun) – aspect, feature, side, element.
- governance (noun) – the act of governing something; administration.
- repeatedly (adverb) – frequently, again and again, invariably, constantly, regularly, consistently.

- Provincial Council (noun) – Provincial Councils were set up in Sri Lanka for the first time in terms of 13th Amendment to the Constitution and the Provincial Councils Act. No. 42 of 1987. The 13th Amendment, which led to the creation of Provincial Councils, assured a power sharing arrangement to enable all nine provinces in the country.
