  1. prohibitive (adjective) – excessively high, exorbitant, excessive, sky-high, unreasonably high.
  2. price gain (noun) – a general increase in the price of something.
  3. Consumer Food Price Index (CFPI) (noun) – a measure of change in retail prices of food products consumed by a defined population group in a given area with reference to a base year.
  4. inflation (noun) – simply meaning “cost of living”; increase of price level of goods & services and vice versa decrease of currency value.
  5. index (noun) – an (economic) data figure reflecting something (e.g. price/quantity) compared with a standard or base value; pointer, indicator.
  6. consumer price index (CPI) (noun) – a monthly measurement of prices for most household goods and services.
  7. Wholesale Price Index (WPI) (noun) – The WPI looks at a basket of wholesale goods (goods purchased in large quantities by businesses directly from manufacturers with the intent of reselling them to retailers). the WPI tracks prices at the factory gate before the retail level.
  8. quicken (verb) – accelerate, step up, increase, surge, rise.
  9. measure (noun) – certain amount, degree, quantity.

  20. basis point (BPS) (noun) – a unit of measure used in finance to describe the percentage change in the value or rate of a financial instrument. One basis point is equivalent to 0.01% (1/100th of a percent). Used for measuring change in interest rate/yield.
  21. preceding (adjective) – previous, prior, earlier.
  22. reading (noun) – figure, indication, record, measurement.
  23. upsurge (noun) – increase, rise, surge, uptrend.
  24. largely (adverb) – mostly, mainly, generally.
  25. drive (verb) – cause to happen, prompt.
  26. constituent (noun) – component, element, ingredient, part.
  27. beverage (noun) – a drink, such as tea, coffee, liquor, beer, milk, juice, or soft drinks, usually excluding water.
  28. log (verb)  – achieve, attain; register, record.
  29. marginally (adverb) – slightly, somewhat, to some degree.
  30. staple (noun) – main item; important element (of something).
  31. coarser comparative adjective of coarse (adjective) – rough.
  32. month-on-month (adjective) – used to compare data for one month with that in previous months.
  33. household (noun) – family, house.
  34. disconcertingly (adverb) – unsettlingly, disturbingly, worryingly.
  35. sequential (adjective) – happened in sequence/order/succession.
  36. consume (verb) – eat.
  37. widely (adverb) – extensively; in many places; by many people 
  38. hinterland (noun) – remote areas of a country away from the coastal areas/the banks of major rivers.
  39. varying (adjective) –differing, different, varied, diverse.
  40. precarity (noun) – the state of being uncertain/insecure/unsafe.
  41. kharif sowing/crops (noun) – monsoon crops; seeds sowing in the beginning (Jun) of the monsoon and harvesting at the end of the season (Oct) in the South Asia.
  42. rabi sowing/crops (noun) – winter crops; seeds sowing in the beginning (Nov) of the winter and harvesting at the end of the season (Apr) in the South Asia.
  43. sowing (noun) – an act of seeding a plant or crop.
  44. corresponding (adjective) – similar, comparable, identical, resembling, matching, much the same.
  45. outlook (noun) – prospects, chances, possibilities, expectations, future.
  46. far from (phrase) – not, not at all; nowhere near, a long way from.
  47. reassuring (adjective) – optimistic, favourable, encouraging, promising, hopeful.
  48. year-on-year (adjective) – year over year (for comparison).
  49. dizzying (adjective) – confused, muddled, bewildered; off-balance, shaky, unsteady.
  50. percentage point (noun) – the difference between two percentages is termed as percentage point. (for example: “Interest Rates Jump From 10% to 12%”. In this case, the interest rate increased by “2 percentage points” or you can say that the interest rate is increased by 20%).
  51. reflect (verb) – indicate, show, display, demonstrate, represent, exhibit.
  52. volatility (noun) – unpredictability, instability, unreliability.
  53. prone (adjective) – susceptible to, vulnerable to, liable to, subject to, vulnerable to, at/in risk of.
  54. broader superlative adjective of broad (adjective) – comprehensive, extensive, wide, wide-ranging, broad-ranging.
  55. deflation (noun) – a decrease in the general price level of goods and services.
  56. contract (verb) – decline, decrease, diminish, reduce.
  57. Department of Consumer Affairs (noun) – Department of Consumer Affairs is one of the two Departments under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution. It was constituted as a separate Department in June 1997 as it was considered necessary to have a separate Department to give a fillip to the nascent consumer movement in the country.

  59. likely (adverb) – probably, presumably, potentially, doubtlessly.
  60. ripple effect/domino effect/knock-on effect (noun) – an event (or a process/action) that causes several other events to happen indirectly one after the other; secondary/indirect effect, consequence/implication, chain of events.
  61. derail (verb) – obstruct, impede, hinder, hamper, block, interrupt, thwart, stop, restrict.
  62. momentum (noun) – the increase in the rate of growth of something; strength, impetus.
  63. spiralling (adjective) – increasing continuously & dramatically.  
  64. spiral (verb) – increase, rise, surge, escalate.
  65. infuse (verb) – instil, inject, impart, inculcate, introduce, implant, add.
  66. uncertainty (noun) – unpredictability, unreliability, riskiness/precariousness.
  67. have one’s task cut out (phrase) – be faced with a tough task/work to do; faced with a lot of hard work to accomplish something.
