  1. repo rate (noun) – it is the rate at which the central bank of a country (RBI in case of India) lends money to commercial banks in the event of any shortfall of funds.
  2. benchmark (adjective) – standard, base, basis.
  3. slowdown (noun) – economic decline, recession, slump/depression.
  4. anticipate (verb) – expect, foresee, precede.
  5. the monetary policy committee (MPC) (noun) – it is a six-member panel that is expected to bring “value and transparency” to rate-setting decisions. It will feature three members from the RBI — the Governor, a Deputy Governor and another official — and three independent members to be selected by the Government. The MPC will meet four times a year to decide on monetary policy by a majority vote.
  6. hold one’s horses (phrase) – to wait, to be patient, to pause.
  7. conservative (adjective) – moderate, reasonable, cautious/unexaggerated.
  8. divergent (adjective) – differing, varying, dissimilar/contrasting.

  17. cartel (noun) – a group of manufacturers/businesses fixing a high price to avoid competition and to make more money.
  18. runaway (adjective) – out of control, hyper, unchecked.
  19. remote (adjective) – unlikely, doubtful, improbable/implausible.
  20. falter (verb) – stagger, stumble/flounder, halt/pause.
  21. solely (adverb) – only, simply, merely.
  22. take into account (phrase) – consider, bear in mind, heed/note.
  23. prudent (adjective) – wise, sensible, careful/ far-sighted.
  24. uncertainty (noun) – apprehension, quandary/dilemma, doubt.
  25. tailor (verb) – adapt, adjust, modify/change (for a particular purpose).
  26. stressed assets (noun) – non-performing loans/assets; an account where principal and/or interest remains overdue for a period of time.
  27. strike down (phrasal verb) – abolish, annul, nullify (a law or regulation).
  28. underline (verb) – emphasize, highlight, underscore.
  29. compromise (verb) – undermine, weaken, discredit.
