  1. Omicron variant (noun) – On 26 November 2021, WHO designated the (new coronavirus) variant B.1.1.529 a variant of concern, named Omicron, on the advice of WHO’s Technical Advisory Group on Virus Evolution (TAG-VE). The first known confirmed Omicron infection was from a specimen collected on November 9. In recent weeks, infections in South Africa have increased steeply, coinciding with the detection.
  2. vaccination (noun) – treatment with a vaccine to protect against a particular disease; immunization.
  3. cut (verb) – reduce, decrease, lessen.
  4. novel coronavirus (nCoV) (SARS-CoV-2) (noun) – a new strain (type/variety) coronavirus that has not been previously identified in humans. (Courtesy: WHO)
  5. outbreak (noun) – outburst, flaring up, breakout, sudden appearance/occurrence of something.
  6. shroud (verb) – cover, conceal, hide.
  7. genetic (adjective) – relating to genes/genetics.

  14. mutation (noun) – a significant and basic “alteration/variation” in the DNA sequence.
  15. spike (S) protein (noun) – spike (S) protein is the sole viral membrane protein responsible for coronavirus entry into host cells.
  16. specimen (noun) – sample.
  17. diligently (adverb) – carefully, attentively, thoroughly.

  33. strain (noun) – variety, kind, type; variant, mutant.
  34. probably (adverb) – most likely, in all likelihood, all things considered, perhaps.
  35. flag (verb) – indicate, identify, point out.
  36. reflect (verb) – indicate, show, display, demonstrate, reveal, exhibit.
  37. relatively (adverb) – comparatively, proportionately, somewhat, to a certain extent/degree.
  38. in place (phrase) – set up, established, arranged.
  39. underscore (verb) – underline, emphasize, highlight.
  40. quarantine (noun) – a process of separating out people, animals and things (such as plants) from others for a period of time in order to control/restrict the spread of a contagious disease; Quarantine is imposed to separate and restrict the movement of persons, who may have been exposed to infectious disease, but not yet known to be ill.
