- coercion (noun) – it means compelling an individual to act against his/her will by the use of psychological pressure or physical force causing bodily injury; force/pressure, compulsion, enforcement, demand, constraint, oppression, harassment, intimidation.
- National Medical Commission (NMC) (noun) – The National Medical Commission (NMC) has been constituted by an act of Parliament known as National Medical Commission Act, 2019 which came into force on 25.9.2020. It is an Indian regulatory body of 33 members which regulates medical education and medical professionals. It replaced the erstwhile Medical Council of India constituted under section 3A of the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956.
- conversion therapy (noun) – it is also known as “reparative therapy”. It is a range of dangerous and discredited practices that falsely claim to change a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity, or expression.
- sexual orientation (noun) – the emotional, romantic, or sexual attraction that a person feels toward another person.
- gender identity (noun) – the personal sense of one’s own gender. Gender identity can correlate with a person’s assigned sex at birth or can differ from it.
- medical intervention (noun) – In medicine, a treatment, procedure, or other action taken to prevent or treat disease, or improve health in other ways.
- welcome (adjective) – pleasing, gratifying, heartening, promising.
- move (noun) – action, act, step, measure.
- discrimination (noun) – prejudice, intolerance, inequity, bigotry, unfairness, partisanship (against an individual or group of individuals by society and its institutions (basically in the procedures, policies or objectives) as a whole.
- LGBTQIA+ community (noun) – lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, intersex, asexual (and many other terms) Community.

- asexual (noun) – someone who is asexual doesn’t experience sexual attraction and/or doesn’t desire sexual contact.
- be subjected to (Verb) – put through, treat with, undergo, expose to, lay open to.
- psychiatric (adjective) – relating to mental illness and/or relating to mental treatment.
- psychosomatic (adjective) – (of an illness) caused by emotional factors (stress, worry, etc.) rather than by a physical problem such as a disease/an infection.
- exorcism (noun) – cleansing, purification; expulsion (of an evil spirit); The act of exorcism involves the expulsion of an evil spirit or demon who has taken residence inside a person.
- lead to (verb) – cause, produce, bring about, result in, give rise to.
- trauma (noun) – torment, distress, suffering.
- manifest (verb) – (of a disease) become noticeable/visible through the appearance of symptoms.
- American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP) (noun) – it is a non-profit professional medical organization whose mission is the promotion of mentally healthy children, adolescents, and families through research, training, advocacy, prevention, collaborative diagnosis and treatment, peer support, and collaboration.
- contend (verb) – state, assert, claim, affirm, pronounce, insist, aver.
- premise (noun) – reason, cause, basis, ground, factor, pretext, motive.
- homosexuality (noun) – Homosexuality is romantic attraction, sexual attraction, or sexual behavior between members of the same sex or gender.

The council has made regulations for “standards of professional conduct, etiquette and code of ethics” which should be observed by medical practitioners. These are mandatory and followed by all other State Medical Councils.

- Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code (noun) – Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code criminalises homosexuality. - Indian Penal Code (IPC) (noun) – The Indian Penal Code (IPC) is the official criminal code of India. It is a comprehensive code intended to cover all substantive aspects of criminal law. The draft was passed into law on 6 October 1860. The Code came into operation on 1 January 1862. The Indian Penal Code of 1860, subdivided into 23 chapters, comprises 511 sections. IPC deals with crimes and punishments.
