  1. acceleration (noun) – increase, surge.
  2. foretold past and past participle of foretell (verb) – predict, foresee, anticipate, expect.
  3. volatile (adjective) – turbulent, unstable, unsteady, uncertain.
  4. inflation (noun) – simply meaning “cost of living”; increase of price level of goods & services and vice versa decrease of currency value.
  5. tame (verb) – control, curb, mitigate, moderate.
  6. resurgence (noun) –  recovery, revival, rebound, resurrection, renaissance, re-emergence.
  7. headline inflation (noun) – it is a measure of the total inflation within an economy, including commodities such as food and energy prices. 
  8. core inflation (noun) – it is a measure of the total inflation within an economy, excluding commodities such as food and energy prices (which change frequently).
  9. Retail inflation or Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation (noun) – The change in the price index of the basket of consumer goods and services over a period of time is referred to as CPI-based inflation or retail inflation.
  10. Wholesale or Wholesale price Index (WPI) inflation (noun) – The change in the price index of the basket of wholesale goods (and no services) over a period of time is referred to as WPI-based inflation or wholesale inflation.
  11. likely (adverb) – probably, in all probability, presumably, doubtlessly.
  12. uptick (noun) – a small increase or upward trend.
  13. stark (adjective) – clear, distinct, evident, obvious, striking.
  14. pose (verb) – present, constitute, cause, produce, give rise to (a problem/danger).

National Statistical Office (NSO) (noun) – The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation came into existence as an independent Ministry on 15th October 1999 after the merger of the Department of Statistics and the Department of Programme Implementation.  The Ministry has two wings, one relating to Statistics and the other relating to Programme Implementation. The Statistics Wing re-designated as National Statistics Office (NSO) consists of the Central Statistics Office (CSO) and National Sample Survey Office (NSSO). CSO is an attached Office and NSSO is subordinate Office under the control of Ministry of S&PI.

  18. Consumer Price Index (CPI) (noun) – The CPI looks at the basket of consumer goods and services and it measures the change in price of this basket over a period of time. To put it simply, the CPI monitors retail prices at a certain level for a particular commodity.
  19. Wholesale Price Index (WPI) (noun) – The WPI looks at a basket of wholesale goods (goods purchased in large quantities by businesses directly from manufacturers with the intent of reselling them to retailers). the WPI tracks prices at the factory gate before the retail level.
  20. year-on-year (adjective) – year over year (for comparison).
  21. Consumer Food Price Index (CFPI) (noun) – a measure of change in retail prices of food products consumed by a defined population group in a given area with reference to a base year.
  22. index (noun) – an (economic) data figure reflecting something (e.g. price/quantity) compared with a standard or base value; pointer, indicator.
  23. accelerate (verb) – increase, rise, expedite, step up, speed up.
  24. steep (adjective) – sudden, sharp, rapid.
  25. basis point (BPS) (noun) – a unit of measure used in finance to describe the percentage change in the value or rate of a financial instrument. One basis point is equivalent to 0.01% (1/100th of a percent). Used for measuring change in interest rate/yield.
  26. propel (verb) – spur, prompt, drive, impel, push.
  27. upsurge (noun) – increase, rise, surge, uptrend.

  33. month-on-month (adjective) – used to compare data for one month with that in previous months.
  34. coarse (adjective) – rough.
  35. hinterland (noun) – remote areas of a country away from the coastal areas/the banks of major rivers.
  36. staple (noun) – a main item of  production; main item; important element (of something).
  37. palpable (adjective) – noticeable, visible, recognizable, conspicuous, discernible, tangible.
  38. sequential (adjective) – happened in sequence/order/succession.
  39. price gain (noun) – a general increase in the price of something.
  40. on a boil (phrase) – it refers to a situation which is very strong or active or intense.
  41. surge (noun) – sudden increase or rise of something.
  42. percentage point (noun) – the difference between two percentages is termed as percentage point. (for example: “Interest Rates Jump From 10% to 12%”. In this case, the interest rate increased by “2 percentage points” or you can say that the interest rate is increased by 20%).
  43. perishables (noun) – things, especially foods, likely to decay quickly.
  44. perishable (adjective) – easily spoilt, biodegradable; relating to items likely to decay quickly, especially foods.
  45. swung past tense of swing (verb) – change, oscillate, fluctuate.
  46. sizeable (adjective) – considerable, substantial, significant, appreciable.
  47. deflation (noun) – a decrease in the general price level of goods and services.
  48. extent (noun) – level, degree, amount, ratio, magnitude, proportion.
  49. gauge (verb) – measure, calculate, determine.
  50. the fact that (phrase) – used to refer to a specific situation under consideration/discussion.
  51. preceding (adjective) – previous, prior, earlier.
  52. aggregate (verb) – combine, accumulate, collect.
  53. aggregated data (noun) – data that are collected and analysed comprehensively. 
  54. Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) (noun) – a leading business information company. It was established in 1976, primarily as an independent think tank. (Think tank is a panel of experts who provide advice and ideas on political, social or economic issues).
  55. register (verb) – record, report, log.
  56. TOP (abbreviation/acronym) – Tomatoes, onions and potatoes, popularly known as TOP vegetables, are the three largest cultivated, produced and consumed vegetables in India
  57. triumvirate (noun) – a group of three powerful or notable things (or) a group of three powerful or notable people having influence.
  58. source of concern (phrase) – a cause/reason of worry.
  59. balloon (verb) – increase rapidly; rise, surge, soar, shoot up, escalate
  60. pace (noun) – rate, speed.
  61. swell (verb) – increase, rise, escalate, surge.
  62. inclement (adjective) – bad, severe, extreme, harsh, adverse; rainy, snowy, windy, stormy.
  63. deplete (verb) – use up, utilize, absorb, exhaust, consume, exhaust, drain, reduce, diminish, decrease.
  64. shortfall (noun) – deficit, inadequacy/deficiency; shortcoming/defect.
  65. rabi sowing/crops (noun) – winter crops; seeds sowing in the beginning (Nov) of the winter and harvesting at the end of the season (Apr) in the South Asia.
