Today’s word list-2 for The Hindu Editorial (A strategic pause) – Dec 06, 2019:

  1. pause (noun) – break/interval, temporary stoppage, suspension.
  2. hold (verb) – cause to stay at a certain level.
  3. rate cut (noun) – a decision by a central bank (like RBI in India) to reduce its main interest rate to the banks (like SBI, ICICI & etc in India) when these commercial banks get money from the central bank. Once this rate goes down, the banks are in a position to give loans at lower interest rates to individuals and the industry.
  4. catch one’s breath (phrase) – take rest after some exercise.
  5. paramount (adjective) – most important; supreme, of prime importance.
  6. inflation (noun) – simply meaning “cost of living”; increase of price level of goods & services and vice versa decrease of currency value.
  7. rear one’s head (phrase) – (of an unpleasant subject) present itself.

  18. repo rate (noun) – it is the rate at which the central bank of a country (RBI in case of India) lends money to commercial banks in the event of any shortfall of funds.

  31. sanguine ( adjective) – optimistic, positive, hopeful.
  32. spike (noun) – a sharp rise/increase of something.
  33. kharif crops (noun) – monsoon crops; seeds sowing in the beginning (Jun) of the monsoon and harvesting at the end of the season (Oct) in the South Asia.
  34. all things considered (phrase) – considering everything, all in all, on the whole.
  35. steam (noun) – energy, momentum, impetus.
