Today’s word list-2 for The Hindu Editorial (A strategic pause) – Dec 06, 2019:
- pause (noun) – break/interval, temporary stoppage, suspension.
- hold (verb) – cause to stay at a certain level.
- rate cut (noun) – a decision by a central bank (like RBI in India) to reduce its main interest rate to the banks (like SBI, ICICI & etc in India) when these commercial banks get money from the central bank. Once this rate goes down, the banks are in a position to give loans at lower interest rates to individuals and the industry.
- catch one’s breath (phrase) – take rest after some exercise.
- paramount (adjective) – most important; supreme, of prime importance.
- inflation (noun) – simply meaning “cost of living”; increase of price level of goods & services and vice versa decrease of currency value.
- rear one’s head (phrase) – (of an unpleasant subject) present itself.
- fiscal deficit (noun) – the difference between total expenditure and total income of the government.
- glide path (noun) – trajectory, approach; a series of actions taken to get the expected result.

- The monetary policy committee (MPC) (noun) – it is a six-member panel that is expected to bring “value and transparency” to rate-setting decisions. - steam (noun) – energy, momentum, impetus.
