Today’s “Phrase of the Day” is soften (or cushion) the blow and it is a phrase meaning “to reduce or ease the pain/difficulty/hardship of something (e.g. bad or unpleasant situation); make something less shocking/upsetting/painful”.
Example Sentence: Curbing liberties so that coronavirus’ spread can be checked is the right thing for the government to do – but only if it helps to cushion the blow.
