Today’s “Phrase of the Day” is “occupy the field” and its meaning is “to preempt (seize) or monopolize an area of statutory law by a higher authority.”.
Example Sentence: Judicial primacy and the collegium’s creation happened in this period (between 1971 and 1993), and while the collegium has since acquired considerable notoriety for being arbitrary and undemocratic, it still occupies the field today. (The Supreme Court collegium is a five-member body, which is headed by the incumbent Chief Justice of India (CJI) and comprises the four other seniormost judges of the court at that time, to recommend appointments & transfers of judges. There is no mention of the collegium in the Constitution of India).
