Are you being impertinent? – The Hindu (July 11, 2016)

We had just finished a series of interactions with students, and as faculty often do, we were sitting around discussing the sessions, sharing our impressions and reactions. While recounting a particular exchange, one of my colleagues mentioned that the student had repeatedly used the term “you guys” while speaking to them. For further reading, visit “The Hindu”.

Today’s Words:

  1. Impertinent (noun) – rude, insolent, impolite, unmannerly.
  2. Peer (noun) – equal, fellow, co-worker, person of the same age.
  3. Sprinkle with (verb) – disperse something randomly.
  4. Informality (noun) –  casualness, non-formality; ease of manner, naturalness.
  5. Hierarchical (adjective) – arranged in order of rank.
  6. Linguist (noun) –  one who studies a subject related to languages (linguistics).
  7. Register (noun) – a variation in using language in different ways in different contexts.
  8. Awkwardness (noun) – embarrassment, discomfort,  uneasiness.
  9. Nuance (noun) – fine distinction, subtle distinction/difference, variation.
  10. Trait (noun) – characteristic, attribute, feature, quality.
