Today’s “Phrase of the Day” is “call off the dogs” and its meaning is “to stop criticizing someone; to stop attacking someone; to stop behaving aggressively toward someone”.
Example Sentence: Italy’s draconian defamation laws have long been exploited by the powerful to intimidate and silence troublesome voices. The outrageous bullying of Roberto Saviano, one of Italy’s best-known writers, illustrates why such action (reform) is long overdue. The vindictive hounding of a respected journalist (Mr Saviano), who had the temerity to call her a “b*****d”, rather seems to back that thesis up. Italy’s new prime minister Ms Meloni, Italy’s deputy prime minister Mr Salvini and the culture minister Mr Sangiuliano should call off the dogs and allow Mr Saviano to work in peace.
