Today’s “Word of the Day” is “client state“ and it is a noun meaning “a country that is dependent on another larger and more powerful country (for support and protection)“.
Example Sentence: While Belarus is entirely dependent on Russia, this does not preclude (prevent) a client state from proving a difficult partner. North Korea is troublesome for China, Haiti for the United States, and there are other examples nearer home. Belarus President Aleksander Lukashenko even threatened to block the pipeline transporting Russian gas through Belarus to the EU, a threat speedily negated by Moscow.
