  1. honest broker (noun) – a neutral negotiator; a non-partisan mediator.
  2. ties (noun) – bond, connection, association, relationship.
  3. facilitator (noun) – a person/thing that encourages action and makes it easier.
  4. scrutinise (verb) – examine carefully, inspect; investigate.
  5. summit (noun) – meeting, talk, discussion (between heads of government).
  6. bilateral (adjective) – involving two groups or countries.
  7. overlap (verb) – to have something in common.
  8. Kremlin (noun) – The name “Kremlin” means “fortress inside a city”, and is often also used metonymically to refer to the official residence of the President of the Russian Federation in a similar sense to how “White House” refers to the Executive Office of the President of the United States; Kremlin is a fortified complex in the center of Moscow city. (Metonym is used as an alternative for something else with which it is closely related/associated).
  9. aggression (noun) – hostility, belligerence, combativeness, warmongering, hawkishness.
  10. brief (verb) – inform of, tell about, update on, notify of.
  11. trilateral (adjective) – involving three nations/parties/groups.
  12. Russia, India and China grouping (RIC) (noun) – a grouping acronym referring to the countries of Russia, India, and China and what makes the trilateral (grouping) unique-and important-is the convergence of geography, foreign policy philosophy, and economic ascent within the group.
  13. pick up (phrasal verb) – begin/start again, resume, recommence, carry on, go on, continue.
  14. on the sidelines (phrase) – it refers to a meeting/forum occurs at the same time as the scheduled meeting/forum, but is not itself an item on the agenda.

G-20 (noun) – The G20, formed in 1999, is a group of twenty of the world’s largest economies that meets regularly to coordinate global policy on trade, health, climate, and other issues. It brings together the world’s major advanced and emerging economies. The G20 comprises Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, EU, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, UK and USA. The G20 Countries together represent around 90% of global GDP, 80% of global trade, and two thirds of the world’s population.
  16. Line of Actual Control (LAC) (noun) – the de-facto (effective) border between India and China. The LAC is a 4,057-km border running through three areas-Western (Ladakh, Ladakh (Kashmir)), middle (Uttarakhand, Himachal), and eastern (Sikkim, Arunachal).
  17. dent (verb) – damage, impair, cripple, erode, weaken, undermine.
  18. co-existence (noun) – The state of two or more different things existing/living together at the same time or in the same place.
  19. neighbour (noun) – a country that is next to another country; (bordering) country.
  20. outline (verb) – indicate, delineate, give a rough idea of, summarize.
  21. face to face (adjective) – personally, in person, head on, direct.
  22. multilateral (adjective) – involving many different countries (in which all WTO member countries are party to the agreement).
  23. BRICS countries (plural noun) – the acronym coined to associate five major emerging national economies: Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. The BRICS members are known for their significant influence on regional affairs.
  24. Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) (noun) – The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) is a permanent intergovernmental international organisation, the creation of which was announced on 15 June 2001 in Shanghai (China). The SCO currently comprises eight Member States (China, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan) and is seen as a counterweight to NATO (The North Atlantic Treaty Organization). It was established as a multilateral association to ensure security and maintain stability across the vast Eurasian region, join forces to counteract emerging challenges and threats, and enhance trade, as well as cultural and humanitarian cooperation.

  27. go ahead (phrasal verb) – to proceed, to continue to do something, to start/begin to do something.
  28. S-400 Triumf missile defence system (noun) – Developed by Russia, the S-400 (Triumph/Triumf) air defence system integrates a multifunction radar, autonomous detection and targeting systems, anti-aircraft missile systems, launchers, and command and control centre. It is capable of firing three types of missiles to create a layered defence. The S-400 is capable of destroying incoming hostile aircraft, missiles and even drones within a range of up to 400 km. It has a tracking capability of nearly 600 km.

  35. Troika plus (noun) – a group of Russia, the US, China, and Pakistan, is known as the Troika Plus on Afghanistan.
  36. take something into account (phrase) – consider, take into consideration, have regard to, reckon with.
  37. walk/balance on a tightrope (phrase) – to deal with a difficult situation in which a very small error could have very bad outcomes.
  38. The Indo-Pacific (region) (noun) – the Indo-Pacific region refers to the confluence (convergence) of the Pacific and Indian Oceans, which interconnect in Southeast Asia (Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, and more).
  39. disentangle (verb) – disengage, detach, disconnect.
  40. thread (noun) – subject, subject matter, train of thoughtdirection.
  41. potent (noun) – strong, powerful, effective.
  42. bilaterally (adverb) – between the two countries involved.
