  1. National Statistical Office (NSO) (noun) – The National Statistical Office is the state statistical agency set up by an Act of the Parliament, India, Statistical Services Act (Chapter 386) 1980, responsible for collecting, compiling and disseminating official statistical information on a regular and timely basis.
  2. Gross domestic product (GDP) (noun) – a measure of economic activity in a country. It is the total value of a country’s annual output of goods and service.
  3. merit (verb) – deserve, warrant, be worthy of, justify.
  4. scrutiny (noun) – examination, inspection, investigation.
  5. fair (adjective) – reasonable, satisfactory, acceptable, adequate, sufficient.
  6. bewilderment (noun) – bafflement, puzzlement, mystification, confusion, perplexity.

  23. expansion (noun) – increase, rise; growth, development
  24. given (preposition) – considering, taking into account, bearing in mind.
  25. pace (noun) – rate, speed.
  26. base effect (noun) – it relates to inflation in the corresponding period of the previous year, if the inflation rate was too low in the corresponding period of the previous year, even a smaller rise in the Price Index will arithmetically give a high rate of inflation now.
  27. factor in (verb) – consider, take into account, take into consideration.
  28. gauge (verb) – measure, calculate, determine.
  29. import (noun) – meaning, essence; importance, significance.
  30. headline (adjective) – pronounced, marked, striking, glaring, obvious.
  31. headline inflation (noun) – it is a measure of the total inflation within an economy, including commodities such as food and energy prices. 
  32. gross value added (GVA) (noun) – it is a measure of total output and income in the economy. It provides the rupee value for the amount of goods and services produced in an economy after deducting the cost of inputs and raw materials that have gone into the production of those goods and services. It also gives a sector-specific picture like what is the growth in an area, industry, or sector of an economy. On the other hand, GDP or gross domestic product is a measure of economic activity in a country. It is the total value of a country’s annual output of goods and services.

  34. key (adjective) – vital, important, essential, crucial.
  35. livestock (noun) – farm animals (cattle, goats & etc.).

  45. fertilizer (noun) – Fertilizers are organic or inorganic substances containing chemical elements that improve the growth of plants and the fertility (productiveness) of the soil.

  49. private consumption or consumption expenditure (noun) – the spending by households (consumers) on goods and services, excluding new housing.

  53. lack of traction (noun phrase) – used to describe that something doesn’t seem to be gaining any attention, momentum, or success.
  54. shrank past of shrink (verb) – lessen, reduce, decrease.
  55. set (verb) – make ready, prepare, arrange.
  56. serve as (verb) – act as, function as.
  57. poll-eve (noun as modifier) – the period just prior poll.
  58. talking point (noun) – a subject//topic of discussion.
  59. sober (adjective) – serious/sensible, serious-minded, factual, logical, well considered, straightforward, self-controlled, strict, restrained, unemotional.
  60. draw on (phrasal verb) – use, utilize, employ, rely on, make use of.
