  1. truce (noun) – an ad-hoc (temporary/makeshift) arrangement, arrived at by the combatants (fighters), to pause the fighting. Temporary cessation/suspension (of hostilities); A deal to stop fighting for a certain time.
  2. ceasefire (noun) – a negotiated agreement that will be accompanied by other associated commitments to de-escalate the fighting; a temporary stoppage of war, truce, armistice.
  3. cessation of hostilities (phrase) – it means that the combatants are willing to stop fighting and to restrain their forces.
  4. talks (noun) – discussion, discourse, debate, dialogue, deliberation, negotiation, parley.
  5. Hamas (noun) – Hamas is an Islamist militant group based in Gaza.
  6. keener comparative form of keen (adjective) – extremely keen, eager, or enthusiastic.
  7. hostage (noun) – a person captured or held as security for the fulfilment of certain conditions/terms.

Hezbollah (noun) – Hezbollah is a Shiite Muslim political party and militant group based in Lebanon, where its extensive security apparatus, political organization, and social services network have fostered its reputation as “a state within a state.” Founded in the chaos of the fifteen-year Lebanese Civil War, the Iran-backed group is driven by its opposition to Israel and its resistance to Western influence in the Middle East.

  26. Houthis rebels (noun) – a decades-old resistance movement, born in opposition to Saudi Arabia’s religious influence. Yemen’s Houthi rebels are leading the fight against a Saudi-led coalition.

  30. The International Court of Justice (ICJ)/ World Court (noun) – It is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations (UN). It was established in June 1945 by the Charter of the United Nations and began work in April 1946. The seat (headquarters) of the Court is at the Peace Palace in The Hague (Netherlands).
  31. genocide (noun) – mass murder, massacre, racial killing.
  32. International Criminal Court (ICC) (noun) – an intergovernmental organization and international tribunal that sits in The Hague, Netherlands. The International Criminal Court (ICC) investigates and, where warranted, tries individuals charged with the gravest crimes of concern to the international community: genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity and the crime of aggression. As a court of last resort, it seeks to complement, not replace, national Courts. Governed by an international treaty called the Rome Statute, the ICC is the world’s first permanent international criminal court.
  33. Amnesty International (noun) – founded in 1961, it is a non-governmental organization with its headquarters in the United Kingdom focused on human rights.
  34. Human Rights Watch (HRW) (noun) – it is one of the world’s leading independent organizations dedicated to defending and protecting human rights. It defends the rights of people in 100 countries worldwide, spotlighting abuses and bringing perpetrators to justice.
  35. unperturbed (adjective) – untroubled, undisturbed, unworried, unmoved.
  36. thanks to (phrase) – as a result of, owing to, due to, because of.
  37. enjoy (verb) – benefit from, have, be favoured with, be blessed with.
  38. Gaza (noun) – a Palestinian city in the Gaza Strip. Gaza Strip is a self-governing Palestinian territory surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea, Israel and Egypt.
