
Today’s “Phrase of the Day” is up the ante and it is a phrase meaning “to increase demands/stakes (in a tough condition) even though it has risks; To take an action that raises the risks”.
Example Sentence: The west must make it clear to Moscow that upping the ante further will carry a substantial economic cost (loss) in the form of further sanctions (penalty/ban) and scupper the Nord Stream 2 project. From Bosnia to Belarus, Mr Putin’s baleful (threatening) influence in the former Soviet sphere is deepening (increasing). Robust western solidarity (cooperation) with Kyiv will be needed to prevent a resurgence (comeback) of the same in Ukraine this winter.
