  1. self-inflicted (adjective) – caused suffering to oneself (on his/her own).
  2. tariff (noun) – a tax imposed by one country on the goods and services imported from another country.
  3. spare (verb) – refrain from infliction; be merciful to, be lenient to, leave unpunished, forgive, let off.

  11. Federal Reserve (US) (noun) – the central banking system of the United States (The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is India’s central banking institution).

  13. expose (verb) – subject, lay open, put at risk of, make vulnerable.
  14. relative (adjective) – comparative, comparable, correlative, respective, corresponding, reciprocal.
  15. retaliatory (adjective) – revenging, vengeful, avenging.
  16. retaliatory tariff (noun) – punitive tariff; an extra tariff/tax that a country charges on import goods from another country to punish the another country for charging tax on its own export goods.
  17. outweigh (verb) – have the edge over, offset, cancel out, outbalance.
  18. lead to (verb) – cause, result in, bring on, bring about, produce, give rise to.

  23. tariff/trade barriers (noun) – taxes established by each country to restrict foreign trade.
  24. trade barriers (noun) – government-induced restrictions on international trade.
  25. non-tariff barriers (noun) – it refer to any measures, other than customs tariffs, that regulate imports or exports into a country. Non-tariff barriers include embargoes, sanctions, and levies.
  26. term (noun) – period of office; spell, stint, duration, incumbency.
  27. mirror (verb) – reflect, repeat, match, reproduce, imitate.
  28. exempt (verb) – free from, not liable to, not subject to.
  29. truce (noun) – an ad-hoc (temporary/makeshift) arrangement, arrived at by the combatants (fighters), to pause the fighting. Temporary cessation/suspension (of hostilities); A deal to stop fighting for a certain time.
  30. ceasefire (noun) – a negotiated agreement that will be accompanied by other associated commitments to de-escalate the fighting; a temporary stoppage of war, truce, armistice.
  31. cessation of hostilities (phrase) – it means that the combatants are willing to stop fighting and to restrain their forces.
  32. North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) (noun) – a trade pact signed in 1992 that gradually eliminated most tariffs and other trade barriers on products and services passing between the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The pact effectively created a free-trade bloc among the three largest countries of North America.
  33. Free Trade Agreement (FTA) (noun) – an agreement between two or more countries designed to reduce or eliminate certain barriers to trade and investment, and to facilitate stronger trade and commercial ties between participating countries.
  34. to a large/great extent (phrase) – largely, to a considerable degree; in a substantial way.
  35. account for (phrasal verb) – constitute, make up, comprise, form, compose, represent.
  36. rely on (phrasal verb) – depend on, trust, believe in, turn to, lean on, bank on, count on.

  42. ripple (verb) – spread through.
  43. affordability (noun) – the capacity to afford the cost/price of something.
  44. if history is any indication (phrase) – considering what has happened in the past (events and trends), one can reasonably expect/predict a similar thing to happen in the current situation.
  45. strained (adjective) – affected, troubled, fraught, edgy, embarrassed.
  46. albeit (conjunction) – though, even though, however.
